About Our Japanese Lessons

We offer a range of different lesson options to suit your preferences.

Online Lessons

If you prefer to study online, we can facilitate this too! Most of our online lessons are conducted using Zoom, but our teachers can adapt to almost any software you prefer. Just like our face-to-face lessons, we’ll create a lesson that is fun, interactive and that perfectly suits your Japanese learning goals.

Face-to-face Lessons

We have an amazing team of Brisbane-based Japanese tutors who can tailor each session to your Japanese learning goals. Depending on your preferences we can meet at one of our facilities or in a library, cafe or community space of your choice.

Group Lessons

We also run conversational group lessons on a semi-regular basis. Our group lessons are quite casual and perfect for anyone, from beginners right up to fluent Japanese speakers. Come along and apply what you’ve learned in a friendly and open environment!

What to expect from our Japanese Lessons

The focus in each of your lessons is totally up to you. If you want to focus on one specific area, be it speaking, reading, writing or listening, we can structure a lesson plan to ensure you can make solid progress in your area of choice. If you’re not sure what you want to achieve, or you want to have a well-rounded grasp of the full Japanese language, we’ll take a traditional approach that evenly covers all 4 language areas. The areas we cover are split into two categories and include:

Input Focus

Listening

In addition to listening exercises, we’ll also speak and instruct you using more and more Japanese as you progress. For our intermediate and advanced students, we try to conduct our lessons almost exclusively in Japanese to ensure you’re constantly improving your listening skills.

Reading

Learn to read Japanese, including interpretation of Hiragana, Katakana and Japanese Kanji.

Output Focus

Speaking

Speaking Japanese can be an extremely challenging yet rewarding experience. To help you improve your speaking skills, you’ll be encouraged to speak in Japanese during your lessons and to constantly apply new grammar/vocabulary as you learn.

Writing

We’ll teach you how to write or type in Japanese, including how to properly structure a sentence and writing using the correct stroke order.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Unlike traditional schools, we don’t have a fixed location. Many of our group classes are held at the Weller’s Hill Girls Guide. For students wanting private lessons, we offer flexible options and host lessons in your preferred library, cafe, or in some cases in your home.

  • Our teachers use a mixture of self-made teaching resources, textbooks and real world sources. For most beginner or intermediate students we recommend following the Genki textbooks as they provide a fantastic framework to learn Japanese quickly.

For more advanced students, or for students wanting to live or study in Japan, we will also incorporate JLPT study elements (most often using the Kanzen Master textbooks) to help you ace your exams.

  • Yes! We have lots of experience helping students pass their JLPT exams right from N5 all the way up to N1. If you’d like to discuss study options for JLPT, please get in touch and we would be happy to help.

  • Our lesson prices depend heavily on your current Japanese level, study goals and the type of activities involved. Generally, our lessons are priced at $50 per hour.

I struggled to find someone in my area to do one on one Japanese tutoring, then came across Erika. She is very nice, easy to talk to and make me feel comfortable in my lessons. She is fair and flexible with her time schedule and happy to change lessons dates if something comes up during the week.

She’s also a native Japanese speaker which I find really reassuring. I’m incredibly lucky to have her as my Japanese tutor and can’t recommend her enough.
